PRESIDENT'S REPORT
Where has the year gone ! Already its May, Easters been and
gone, the kids are in second term at school, Pennant Bowls is nearing
completion and yet most of us are still pondering what New Year's resolutions
we should try and stick to this year. Probably time to forget them and
concentrate of getting through the rest of this year in one piece.
Anzac Day gives us all the opportunity to pay tribute to the
sacrifices our past and present day service men and women made and are still
making in defence of this great country and for the continued maintenance of
our Australian way of life. Our commemorative service on Sunday 25 April was
very well attended and many thanks are due to Norm Brooks for his organisation
of the event and to the Yagoona Band which returned from the march in the City
to play for us. Thanks also to Barbara Perry MP and Helen Westwood MP for their
attendance and presentations.
On Saturday 17 April, 55 bowling members attended a Special
General Meeting of the Club to consider proposed changes to the Constitution.
All three resolutions were carried by the meeting which will give the effect of
extending the tenure of the Board of Directors from 1 to 2 years, reducing the
number of Directors from 9 to 7 and removing the position of Treasurer from the
Executive Committee and replacing it with a second Vice President. It was
gratifying to see such a good response from eligible members in attending, discussing and
voting at the meeting.
After 11 years of continuous participation in the Premier
League bowls competition, it was with some regret that your Board unanimously
decided not to enter Birrong in the 2010 competition. This was a case of common
sense over heart, as there was no way to justify spending money on outside
players in an attempt to be more competitive or to relying on our loyal home
and bred and unfortunately, to be largely uncompetitive. Birrong is an
inaugural member of the Premier League and there is little doubt that our
continued participation in the competition has played a big part in putting
Birrong ‘on the map' with Bowls organisers and has helped us gain many ongoing
events over those years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
those loyal bowlers who have represented Birrong in the Premier League over the
years and who did so for little other reason than they were just proud to do
so.
Pennants has now entered Round 2 and although the top three
grades are struggling the four teams in the 6's and 7's are all performing
consistently and well and all have great chances of winning their respective
sections and going to the zone playoffs. Our lady bowlers have once again
performed admirably by winning their section of the No. 3 pennants.
I would like to wish all our affiliated Codes the best in
their competitions, with netball and football now in full swing. We hope to
hear of plenty of wins over the next few months. The Central Sports Club held
their annual presentation night last Saturday and by all accounts a great night
was had by all. Congratulations to all winning teams and individuals and a
special ‘well done' to BJ (John Illes) for taking out the Sportsman of the Year
award.
In closing, I would again like to thank all of our sponsors,
large and small, for their continued support of the Club and I urge all members
to support those various businesses whenever the need arises. The list of
current sponsors is noted elsewhere in this Newsletter.
Stay well and continue to support your Club.
