COUGARS CLAIM FINALS
BERTH
The sides to reach the finals series of the 2008 Bowls NSW
Premier League were decided over the weekend when matches that were unable to be
played or completed on their scheduled date due to bad weather were played.
Four sides held hopes of reaching the top six and qualifying for the
finals series. Engadine Cougars, Mt Lewis Lions, Roselands Devils and Merrylands
Magic all held hopes that results of the weekends matches would mean that they
would progress.
The Engadine Cougars match against Mt Lewis Lions proved
to be the critical match of the weekend. The Round 7 match was stopped because
of bad weather. When play originally ceased the Cougars led on two of the rinks,
but the Lions held a 40-38 advantage. Rob Warren picked up where he left off in
this game, finishing with a 32-18 victory over Adam Jeffery while David Ferguson
also went on to win a rink for the Cougars, 21-18 over David Holt. Gary Willis
started with a 17 shot advantage over Shane Garvey, Garvey reduced the margin to
12 for the final score to be 26-12. The Cougars claimed the competition points
with a final scoreline of 67-62 and, crucially, winning on two rinks.
Roseland Devils hopes rested on winning on every rink against Western
Warriors and having results fall favourably. The Devils ran out 69-56 victors,
winning on rinks skipped by Rob Chesher and Cameron Curtis. The Warrior's Paul
McKenzie spoiled the Devils party, recording a 25-17 win over Michael Wolter.
Merrylands held a slim hope of leapfrogging the Cougars, but to do so
the Magic needed to beat the Cougars on every rink, and then win all three rinks
against the Western Warriors. Shane Garvey however made sure the Magic would not
succeed, recording the vital rink win for the Cougars 24-14 over Brendon
Edwards, ensuring that Cougars progressed to the Finals Series. The Magic took
the other two rinks, Andrew Waddell 25-15 over David Ferguson and Zel Trbara
25-24 over Rob Warren giving the Magic the match 64-63.
With Merrylands
unable to catch Engadine on the competition ladder, the Magic's game against
Western Warriors was not played and the game declared a tie.
Maitland City
ensured a home preliminary final, winning on all three rinks to thrash the
Toronto Redbills 76-39.
The Finals Series commences with the Preliminary
Semi Finals on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 May. Third placed Cabramatta Bull Ants
host sixth placed Engadine Cougars. The clash between fourth and fifth place
sees a local derby, with Maitland City Hunters hosting Raymond Terrace Jets. The
winners of these matches progress to the Minor Semi Final on Saturday 24 May.
Engadine and Maitland City will be confident, having won their clashes this
season.
Minor Premiers St Johns Park Saints and second place Taren Point
Power will meet in the Major Semi Final on Saturday 24 May, the winner proceeds
to the Grand Final. The unsuccessful side in the Major Semi Final clashes with
the winner of the Minor Semi Final for a berth in the Grand Final. All matches
on 24 and 25 May are to played at Toronto Workers Bowling Club.
